Ellie House of the Daily Record reports on the dire results experienced by one woman after receiving teeth whitening treatment in a woman’s home.
A young woman from Renfrewshire was left with third degree burns on her lips after having her teeth whitened.
Devastated Abbie Kilbride, 18, from Renfrew, has been left looking “like Kylie Jenner” with swollen painful lips having decided to treat herself to teeth whitening.
Within 24 hours her lips were swollen and covered in yellow blisters and she was left unable to eat or speak before finally seeking hospital treatment on Sunday.
The damage was so severe that Abbie had to be treated at Glasgow Dental Hospital where shocked staff said they had never seen anything like it.
Abbie, who is now on a strict diet of soup until her lips get back to normal, has issued a stark warning on social media which has since been shared more than 5000 times.
“I had wanted to get my teeth whitened as I have recently got my braces out and I noticed a couple of people on my Facebook using a woman that is quite local to me so I booked in and went on Thursday night,” she said.
“She did it from home which I never thought anything of, as maybe it was just a part time job when she had spare time.
“I sat there for just over one hour and every ten to fifteen minutes she would top up the gel on my teeth.
” No questions were asked like my age , have I had my teeth whitened before , any allergies or patch test.
“After I was finished my whole mouth was numb I just assumed it was because I had a gum shield in my mouth for over an hour, but when I looked in the mirror my lips were quite swollen and I was struggling to talk but the woman brushed it off completely and said it was normal and I should put lipstick on and it would be fine.
“I woke up the next morning and my two lips were literally stuck together and the whole right side of my lip was huge as if I had been in the boxing ring.
I always just assumed the only thing that could really go wrong with teeth whitening was that you don’t notice a change in colour
“Not that you could end up like the next Kylie Jenner anyway.”
Abbie who is a bank worker in Glasgow city centre, claims after she went to her GP she was sent away with antihistamines, and was also offered bonjella by a chemist due to the blisters erupting in her mouth.
She was soon left unable to speak because of the pain with two large yellow blisters on the roof of her mouth, and calls to the woman who carried out the treatment went unanswered.
“The denist was so shocked, he also took pictures and was showing the other nurses because of how bad it is.
“The dental hospital was great, unlike my GP, I have now been given the correct medication to hopefully get my mouth back to normal.
“The moral of the story is -do not just go to anyone to get your teeth whitened
“I was completely unaware that only a dentist can do this treatment so if you’re booked in anywhere other than a dentist, please please stay away.”
Abbie declined to give Record Online the name or details of the person who she said carried out the teeth-whitening treatment.
